Market Day In Bree

It's Friday, and that means Market Day in Bree. Actually, there are different Markets all week long, and the vendors travel from town to town, selling their wares. Peer has it's Market on Monday mornings. I've been there quite a few times, starting when we lived there for the first two months of our Belgian experience. Now that we've settled into life in another town, we are branching out more. These Markets are an amazing experience, and Bree has one of the biggest that I've seen. You can find just about anything you need there. I do mean ANYTHING! If you want makeup, a frying pan, or a new outfit for church, then head to the Market. Fresh flowers? The Market. A new mop? The Market. A new pet like a parakeet or a bunny? The Market. (You thought I was joking when I said they have EVERYTHING, didn't you?) Most of the time, I head out there with nothing on my shopping list at all. I just love to walk around and check things out. And people watching is always fun, too. The booths are spread out all over the Centrum of the towns, and you can just meander through the streets for hours.
Do you know what the best thing about Market Day is? The food. Some booths sell fresh fruits and veggies. Butchers have refrigerated booths, where you can pick up a nice steak or pork chops. Other vendors sell nothing but cheese. Brandon loves the ones that sell candy and dried fruits. The dried papaya and pineapple are delicious! Jess loves the olive vendor, and their selection of spicy green and black olives from Italy. My favorites are the waffle and chicken booths. The first thing you need to do when you hit the Market is find the fresh waffle booth. You can get them with lots of choices of toppings, but I suggest you go for the plain one. It's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and has just a hint of vanilla. And it's warm. They hand it to you, wrapped in a napkin, so you can wander around the market while nibbling on it. Sometimes they even sprinkle powdered sugar on it. Then head over to the chicken booth. It's not hard to find, just follow your nose. There is usually a crowd gathered out in front, too. It's a huge wall of rotisserie chickens, heated from behind. Row after row of rotating chickens, slowly roasting in spicy goodness. There is a big pan of new potatoes cooking under them, basting in the juices dripping off of the chickens above. Yes. It's THAT good. I love to pick up a chicken and some potatoes for dinner. The hard part is waiting until dinner to eat them. Do you have any idea how great my van smells on the drive home from the Market? Ahhhhh... Think the hubby would notice if the chicken is missing a leg?
