Den Soeten Naam Jesus

Maaseik is a lovely little town about 25 minutes from where we live. Something keeps drawing us back there. You won't accidentally drive by this place and say, "Hey, that looks interesting. Let's go check that out!" That's right. It's another one of those "you have to know someone who knows someone" spots. Lucky for you, you know someone. Me. First, head to Maaseik and park in this quiet little square. See that little alley way on the right? It's just to the right of the cream colored building. Head down it and take the first left.
This is the hidden jewel that I'm talking about. It's called Den Soeten Naam Jesus. I know it doesn't look like much from the outside, but then again, most things in Belgium don't. It's like the wardrobe from Narnia. Stores and restaurants appear plain, small and simple on the outside, but once you're inside, you find a magical wonderland. This is just one of those places. In English, it's called Sweet Name of Jesus. With a name like that, the food had better be good. Trust me, it is. This is where you'll find the best barbecued ribs in Belgium.
You'll also find a few interesting characters in there, but that's another story all together. If you are looking for atmosphere, then this is the place for you. It feels like you are dining in an old wine cellar. The tables and chairs are all mismatched. It's a very casual place. The menu has a variety of things to choose from, with everything from Italian to Greek, but what you want are the ribs. They serve them up on a wooden plank, accompanied by a salad and a REAL baked potato. (Trust me, this is a big deal. You have no idea how hard it is to find a regular baking potato here. They are all the size of new potatoes. Tiny.) The ribs are delicious, and they are all you can eat. That's dangerous combination for your waistline, but it's a risk I'm willing to take.
If you find yourself in Maaseik, be sure and check this place out. Don't forget to say hi. I'll be the one covered in barbecue sauce.
